FANTEAKWA SOUTH DISTRICT 2023 GREEN GHANA DAY HELD AT THE PREMISES OF THE DISTRICT ASSEMBLY

This year’s edition of the Green Ghana Day programme was held at the premises of the Fanteakwa South District Assembly on 9th June,2023 under the theme Our Forest, Our Health.

The august day is set aside as part of the aggressive Afforestation and reforestation drive of the government.

The District Chief Executive of the Fanteakwa South District Assembly Hon Ernest Ofosu in his brief remarks noted that the initiative by the government is intended to restore the lost forest cover of the country as a result of the illegal small scale mining activities and other associated illegal environmental degradation. 

The Green Ghana Day Programme was launched in June 2021 by President Nana Akufo-Addo under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa South Constituency Hon Kofi Okyere Agyekum reecho the need for tree planting as it is critical for the survival of the environment. He therefore urged his constituents to actively take part in the national exercise.

The district assistant manager at the Begoro Forest Mr Robert Adomako revealed that 10 million trees are being planted across the country with a target of One Hundred thousand trees allotted the Fanteakwa South District 

He also added that in 2022 the district recorded 85% success rate of the project.

Mr. Adomako also revealed that the trees being planted this year involve fruit trees, ornamental plants to name a few.

The Omanhene of Osino Traditional Authority Osabarima Otu-Darko who is a agriculturist by profession also urged the dignitaries to take the programme more seriously to protect and preserve the environment for the benefit of the younger and even unborn generations.

The District Agricultural Director revealed that food production may decrease as a result of the illegal activities that seeks to degrade the environment which will subsequently cause a decrease in rainfall.

He also noted that although there’s the need to plant trees, the most critical part is the survival of the trees which is key to the sustenance of the environment.
