On January 17, 2025, the Fanteakwa South District Assembly held a crucial meeting with miners operating within its jurisdiction to address the growing concern of unlawful and irresponsible mining practices in the district. Convened by the District Mining Committee, the meeting sought to bring clarity, order, and regulation to the mining activities in the area.
Miners were educated on the legal framework governing mining in Ghana, with a detailed explanation of the laws, rules, and procedures for lawful operations. The Assembly also outlined the revenue structure mandated by the state and discussed the approved processes and channels for revenue collection.
The upcoming formation of a District Taskforce was announced, with its role clearly defined to ensure peaceful enforcement of regulations. Miners were encouraged to organize themselves and submit contact details of their representatives for effective communication and feedback between the Assembly and the mining community.
During the interactive session, miners raised concerns over clarity on fees and rates and requested a review of their financial obligations, particularly in cases where payments had been made to large-scale mining companies. They also expressed strong support for actions to eliminate illegal mining activities, which they believe disrupt their legitimate operations.
The meeting was attended by the District Coordinating Director, Heads of Departments and Units, representatives of the mining community, and the Chairman of the NDC, who participated to brief government and the incoming DCE, and to ensure alignment with national policy and party manifesto.
The Assembly remains committed to promoting responsible mining practices that protect the environment, support livelihoods, and ensure peace and order in Fanteakwa South.
